Engen's focus on Health and Safety is deeply aligned to our business and its operations. The role of CSI in this area is to facilitate a shared company-wide approach to these important issues. Within this, we seek social investment opportunities that will be good for our company, whilst also benefiting the communities in which we do business.

We currently invest in the following initiatives:

Paraffin Safety (KlevaKidz)

The Engen’s KlevaKidz campaign educates rural and township communities about safe handling and storage of paraffin. Employing a unique form of industrial theatre, the initiative was launched in 2008. Since then, it has reached more than 79 000 learners in 190 schools located in areas where the household use of paraffin is widespread and paraffin-related accidents are common.

Research commissioned by Engen in 2011, which benchmarked the “before and after” of the first KlevaKidz campaign, illustrated that awareness improved from 24% to 90% and changed the behaviour of more than 80% of participants. The ‘KlevaKidz’ paraffin safety education and awareness campaign is targeting another 300 schools from 2013-15.

Driver Wellness

Driver Wellness is an annual initiative aimed at educating long distance truck drivers about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Drivers have the opportunity to receive free voluntary screening in mobile clinics, administered by qualified nurses and counsellors. Checks for high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, tuberculosis, BMI (Body Mass Index) and HIV/AIDS are undertaken.

Forecourt Wellness

Forecourt Wellness focuses on medical/wellness screening for Engen forecourt attendants. The programme covers Cape Town, Johannesburg, Tshwane and Durban, Bloemfontein, East London and Port Elizabeth. Forecourt attendants are screened for blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose and HIV.
